Plasma TV Buying Guide

Plasma TV's and LCDs (liquid crystal displays) are both kinds of flat screened televisions. Plasmas work by transforming noble gases into plasma, which then discharges light to shape the display on the screen. Each small compartment of gases constitutes one pixel. LCDs, on the other hand, form their displays by placing liquid crystals in front of fluorescent or another type of backlighting.

Plasma TVs are easier to maneuver than traditional CRT televisions (also known as tube televisions). They are flat, with a width of 5 inches, and lightweight, weighing approximately 100 pounds each. In contrast, CRT televisions are much heavier and bulkier. This gives consumers more flexibility when deciding where to place their plasmas; they can be hung on walls or put on stands that support less weight. Manufacturers have even designed plasma televisions that weigh only 45 pounds and are only an inch thick.

Flat screen televisions cover a range of much higher resolutions than do traditional televisions. High definition plasmas and LCDs have resolutions from 1024x768 pixels per square inch to 1920x1080 pixels. The ceiling of resolution for CRTs stands at a mere 480 lines, providing a much more muddled picture than plasmas or LCDs do.

Plasma television manufacturers boast a lifetime of up to 60,000 hours for their televisions, compared to a CRT television's life span of at least 5 years. Which is better? Depending on how much a plasma is turned on, its lifespan can range anywhere from 7 years (turned on for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week) to 55 years (turned on for 3 hours a day). The lifespan of a plasma TV is significantly greater than that of a CRT TV.

Plasmas surpass LCDs in both colour quality and contrast and conventional televisions in colour quality. Plasma TVs generate more vivid colours and blacker blacks than LCD TVs do, allowing for a clearer, more intense image. LCDs are limited by their backlighting, which escapes out through pixels that should be black. However, conventional TVs are the only ones capable of producing true black.

Viewers may also have to take into consideration the angle at which they look at the television. Plasmas can be viewed from either side, the top, or the bottom without significant change in the image. LCDs, on the other hand, cannot; their backlighting causes problems with large viewing angles.

In older models of plasma TVs, the burn-in effect posed a significant problem. When an image (for example, a paused movie) is kept on the screen for too long, the image could be burned into the screen and still faintly visible afterwards. Plasma TV companies have worked to eradicate this problem with much success; while it is still possible for images to burn in, on newer plasmas the possibility is almost negligible.

Plasma televisions have almost no size limitations, as long as the consumer's budget can cover a gigantic screen. LCD and CRT televisions, on the other hand, are constrained to a diagonal measure of about 52 inches.

Cyber Monday Cheetah Mounts AS2S 2 Shelf Wall Mount Bracket for LCD, LED and Plasma TV with Cable Management System Overview

The AS2S is a bi-shelf cable management system. It can be used with or without a Plasma/LCD mount. This unit is designed to fit under your display and provide an on wall solution for other components such as cable boxes, DVD players, game consoles, and stereo components. There are three 2 1/4-Inch holes on the aluminum plate. These holes allow you to cleanly run your cables up to your TV or down to another component, as well as out the bottom to an outlet. After reviewing our competition we realized that most shelving units need to be mounted directly into a wall stud. In most cases the wall stud is placed to the right or to the left of the display, which is not where most people prefer to have their shelves mounted. This is still the most secure option however, after significant research we’ve found that using the correct toggle bolts can allow you to mount your shelving unit wherever you see fit. With the combination of four of these toggle bolts, the shelving unit is able to hold well over 70LBS safely. Each individual toggle bolt provides 75lbs of support. Please note a good toggle bolt is still only as good as the quality of the drywall it is mounted to. If you have water damage or ¼-Inch drywall please add a support for your shelving unit.
